New Executive Director Named One of Brooklyn’s Women of Distinction
Her smile could not be more radiant. Her back was straight like a military officer and with her husband and son beside her, DC 1707 Executive Director Victoria Mitchell accepted an award for being one of twenty-five Brooklyn Women of Distinction, sponsored by the Courier Life Publications.
Mitchell was honored for her many years of union activity, her humanitarian work in Jamaica and her work in her former position as Development Administration Manager for ORT America, where she was the Chapter Chair and the shop steward.
She is a board member of the Children of Jamaica Outreach (COJO). The organization raises funds for the Alpha Boys Home and the Marigold Child Care Center in Jamaica to providing wheelchairs for physically-challenged youth to supplying books and computers, clothing and other items for children in need.
In an article written about her, she was quoted saying “Everybody had given up on these kids, but they were so happy to see us,” she recalled from a recent trip with the organization to Kingston. “At times I had to leave the room because I was in tears,” she said.
