Local 95 President Carolyn Cox

Carolyn Cox believes in the strength of worker unity and action. She became President of Local 95 after serving as Vice President for many years. She replaced Head Start orgnaizer and activist Betty Powell. Carolyn Cox was a Head Start mother in the 1960's. She volunteered at her child's Head Start center eventually joining the staff. She became quite active in the union and through the District Council 1707's Education Department, she earned her Associate, Bachelor, and Master's Degrees in early childhood education.

She has served consistently on the local's negotiation committee, lobbied elected officials on city, state, and federal issues and was active in the fight against former Mayor Michael Bloomberg's anti-child, anti-parent and anti-union Early Learning fiasco. Her focus now is serving her members in over 100 Head Start centers in the five boroughs and Long Island. She also continues to fight for a fair and equitable contract from the City for her members.

"Before I became a Head Start parent, I could not picture myself becoming involved within the union. As I am now part of the union, I have changed that initial concept as my main focus has been on the struggles and betterment of our members and the community as a whole," said Cox.
