U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez made a strong case for the value of labor unions following the release of the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ 2014 Union Membership Report. The report highlights that the median weekly earnings of nonunion workers ($763) were only 79 percent of earnings for workers who were union members ($970). If you do the math, it amounts to $10,000 more a year for union members.

Thousands Storm Capitol Against Paycheck Deception Efforts
1/28: A press conference turned into a rally today when busloads of angry workers showed up at the capitol to speak up against HB1507 and SB1034. Corrections Officer Bill Jones, L1738 Lancaster Co. Prison, spoke at the event. "I'm the guy that keeps violent offenders away from you and your kids," he said. "And I'm the guy this legislation is attacking." Backed by anti-worker 1% groups who hope to make PA a Right to Work for Less state, the bills would strip union rights by prohibiting negotiated voluntary payroll deductions. This legislation would only apply to nurses, teachers, corrections officers and other public service workers, but would NOT apply to insurance companies, big banks or financial companies. Workers also visited their representatives to ask them to vote NO on these bills. Hundreds of workers were left in the cold when capitol police blocked entrance due to a filled rotunda.
