Alma G. Roper, Executive Vice President

Alma G. Roper is the Executive Vice President of New York City Clerical Administrative Employees Local 1549, A.F.S.C.M.E., representing approximately 17,000 Clerical-Administrative Employees in almost every city agency in New York City.

She was elected in November 2009 and subsequently was also elected to the position of Vice President of District Council 37, AFSCME, AFL-CIO (New York City’s largest public employee union in New York City, representing over 125,000 members and 50,000 retirees).

Alma’s civil service career began in 1989 with the New York City Police Department as a Police Communications Technician (PCT), performing the highly skilled and stressful duties of a 911 Calltaker and Police Dispatcher. In 1998, she was promoted to Supervising Police Communications Technician (SPCT).

In 2003, Alma was elected as chairperson of the PCT/SPCT Chapter of Local 1549 and played a major role in successfully lobbying for groundbreaking legislation which eliminated the age requirement for 911 personnel to receive a full pension.

Alma, in 2008, became a grievance representative in the District Council 37 Clerical Division and was assigned to represent Local 1549 members in a variety of titles.
