Flu Information

Vaccines can minimize your chances of getting H1N1 or seasonal flu.

Minimize you chances of getting the flu

  • Get a vaccination if you are in a high-risk group or work a high-risk job.
  • Most healthy adults may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 5-7 days after they become sick.
  • Flu viruses spread person to person mainly through coughing or sneezing. Some people become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it, then touching their mouth or nose.
  • Keep common surfaces – doorknobs, telephones, keyboards – clean. If you use co-workers’ equipment, wipe it down first.
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand cleaner.
  • Avoid touching your nose, mouth and eyes.
  • Eat well, rest, and exercise.
  • Avoid close contact with sick people as much as possible.

About masks

The most common masks will not prevent you from inhaling airborne germs. If you are sick, however, masks can reduce the spread of germs when you cough or sneeze. In everyday settings, covering coughs and sneezes, and keeping hands clean, are more effective in preventing the spread of germs.

If you are sick...

  • Stay home for at least 24 hours after you no longer have a fever. That means you are free of fever without using fever-reducing medication.
  • Limit contact with others.
  • Cover your coughs and sneezes.
