AFSCME Women's Leadership Academy
DEADLINE DATE: FRIDAY, APRIL 26, 2013
Subject: Women's Leadership Academy
More than half of AFSCME members are women. At the local and national levels, these members aren't just participating in union activities, AFSCME women are leading the charge to create change for all working families. These women leaders know that to take on the challenges we face, we must actively recruit others to join us. We must look to the future, allowing new leadership to emerge and equipping seasoned leaders with the tools and the resources they need to get the job done.
That's why AFSCME is excited to launch the Women's Leadership Academy to be held June - December 2013. The Academy, designed for women officers or activists at the local union level, is an important and significant step that we must take to prepare AFSCME women for future leadership roles in our union. Below are the requirements for participation in the Academy and a web address for the Academy application.
This six-month Academy will include:
A four-day orientation session
Completion of a local, council, or international union campaign project
Two formal check-in sessions-one in September and the final session will occur in December ( a minimum of two days each)
Frequent contact through social media and the internet
The national union will pay costs, for overnight accommodations (double occupancy) and meals for all formal sessions. Participants or affiliates are expected to cover travel and any release time or lost wages.
Applicants must demonstrate:
Commitment to build AFSCME over the next decade
Support from their AFSCME local or council
