Did you know that by putting $10.00 or $20.00 per paycheck in a 403(b) plan, you can impact your savings at retirement? You also don’t pay federal taxes on what you sock away now. Come to the meeting to find out more.

Last month we introduced Christine Parker, Financial Planner, to the members who came to the meeting – thank you to those members who came to the meeting.

We are looking for a member committed to be a liaison with LIFESTYLES. If you are that person, we would like you at the April meeting to discuss that role.

At the core, labor unions (we) are working men and women,
unified as one force. Despite any personal differences that
may exist between us, we have banded together to protect and
improve the lives of workers. We rise up together for the
greater good. We defend one another like family.

March Meeting is Tuesday, March 3rd at the Gwynn Center starting at 4:30 pm

WELCOME CHRISTINE PARKER, CFP, PRESIDENT OF PARKER FINANCIAL

Ms. Parker is a Certified Financial Planner and has kindly offered to offer general financial advice to our members. Ms. Parker is named as one of the greater Washington D.C. metro area's 'Top Financial Planners' by Washingtonian Magazine in 2014.
As mentioned in the February newsletter, AFSCME is serving dinner for members while Ms. Parker completes her presentation. If you did not RSVP to Barb Kirkum, you can still attend the meeting. Everyone could use some good financial advice, especially in the economy we have been working in over the last several years. We encourage you to come to the meeting and take advantage of Ms. Parker’s expertise.

One meeting once a month. It’s worth your time.

February Meeting is Tuesday, February 3rd at the Gwynn Center starting at 4:30 pm

Coming next month: Financial Advice for our members:

We have secured a Certified Financial Speaker for the March meeting (March 3rd). She is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER (tm) practitioner, personal finance writer, and president of her own financial company in southern Maryland.
She is named as one of the greater Washington D.C. metro area's 'Top Financial Planners' by Washingtonian Magazine in 2014, 2012, 2010. Her passion is helping you plan well to live well at every major milestone and promoting the value of financial planning through life-long learning. She can help you be better prepared for important financial decisions, because she understands your life is more complex than ever.
In order to best prepare for the March meeting, we need a minimum of 30 attendees who would like to take advantage of the speakers’ financial experience. Please email bkirkum@ccboe.com with your intent to attend by 18th of February. If we do not have a minimum number of employees, the meeting will be cancelled. We can help members when we have a headcount that will enable outside parties to assist us. However, that requires a commitment on our part to take initiative and attend the meeting. We hope you will find this session in March helpful as we continue to seek ways to help our members.

Local 2981 will provide pizza/salad for our members who participate in the March meeting.

IAAP/Secretarial Certification:
IAAP (CAP Secretarial Test) has revamped their website and their testing methods.

The fall exams will be offered August 31-September 5, 2015. The deadline to apply is June 1, 2015, with late applications accepted through June 8, 2015. Late applicants will be required to pay an additional $50 late fee. No applications will be accepted beyond the late deadline dates.

For those of you who have inquired or who are still thinking about testing, please re-visit the IAAP website. If you are seriously considering testing, please let one of the executive board members know. Local 2981 will be purchasing new study materials if there is enough interest in doing so. We have had several members borrow books but no one has sat for the test since May of 2013. Again, it is a 4% increase in your base salary if you successfully sit for the test. The 4% increase in pay lasts for 5 years.

January 2015 Meeting is on Tuesday, January 6th at the Gwynn Center

It’s a New Year – we hope you all had a great Christmas break ---thanks to all who came out to the Greene Turtle for the Christmas party.  It was a good time.  A special thanks to Barb Kirkum and Darlene Willett for organizing the festivities.

Some of 2015’s meetings agenda items will be focused on:

*Tuition – how you can benefit from this resource – if you are planning on staying with CCPS, is this a resource that would benefit you?

*Discipline – what to do if you or a co-worker experience a job related issue at your worksite.  This may seem like common sense to many of us, but some do not know the process if they need to address a situation.

× Items to note:  our negotiating team is meeting monthly and working hard on your behalf.  This is in preparation for future negotiations.  As you know, most of our members are 2 steps behind in salary due to lack of funding.

× Ideas for Lifestyles 2015?  Please email Yolanda Christian at ychristian@ccboe.com

We had 3 members sign up and they had their first class on September 26th in Baltimore. It’s about knowing what is in your contract and knowing who to reach out to with issues or questions…

Save the Date! Holiday Gathering at the Green Turtle in La Plata in December…more to follow

SEPTEMBER 2014 MEETING APPEARANCES: DR. KIMBERLY A. HILL, SUPERINTENDENT AND DR. SYLVIA A. LAWSON, ASST. SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS

Welcome both Dr. Hill and Dr. Lawson for a brief conversation.

It seemed like a short summer: welcome back to all employees.

After speakers finish: we will be having pizza and salad as a welcome back to school for members as well as celebrating Darlene Willett’s retirement from June 30, 2014. Darlene was a huge contributor to our success over the last many years in Local 2981.

Talking Points: our Contract is open in all areas for negotiations – we hope to re-visit the contract this year in December depending on election outcomes. Either way, we need interested members to be on the Negotiations Committee to review everything in the Contract and see where we can make changes. This process starts VERY soon – sign up sheet is on the back table.

Steward Training – will be in October or November – we had one steward quit and we need at least 3-4 stewards to sign up for training this fall. If interested in helping support employees at your school, the sign up sheet is on the back table.

Lifestyles – we will be sponsoring a canned food drive for Lifestyles for Thanksgiving – we would like to sponsor another drive this year as well – please give us your opinions/ideas at the September meeting as to what that drive might be.
